Dr. Kate Threlfall is a systemic therapist who supports client-led changes with a collaborative and integrative approach: blending evidence-based treatments (such as CBT, DBT, ACT, and EMDR), utilizing a narrative lens that is deeply grounded in a relational framework. Kate is supervised by Shawn V. Giammattei, PhD. while working towards licensure. Kate works with individuals, families, and their systems in a solution focused and strengths-based way. As a compassionate clinician providing gender affirming care is paramount. Supported by international clinical experience working with diverse populations Kate holds a deep respect for all cultural backgrounds and intersectional identities.
Kate received a PhD in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in child and family practice from the California School of Professional Psychology (AIU) and has continuously lectured in graduate schools in the US and Hong Kong since 2013. Mentoring graduate students is a passion. Her research interests include early interventions, family-based services, and the transition to parenthood. Clinical specializations: family systems and couples experiencing conflict and divorce, children and adolescents, working systemically within medical and educational settings, and supporting children and adults healing from trauma. With an extensive background in early childhood both as an educator and as a parent Kate is especially attuned to the needs of children and their families. Kate is experienced in working with a wide range of presenting issues such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, substance abuse, ADHD and learning differences, grief and loss, family cut-offs, as well as psychodiagnostic evaluations.
A graduate of UC Berkeley, Kate’s studies in Jurisprudence and Social Policy were foundational for her systems theory lens and social justice orientation. She serves as President of the Association of Family Therapists of Northern California (AFTNC) and is an active member of the American Family Therapy Academy (AFTA).
